Antipasti

Sara's mixed antipasti including salami, bruschetta and treats from our garden

Alex's Wine recommendation; Prosecco Martini Brut ASDA £6.00 on offer down from £10.75; Aldi Prosecco Valdobbiadene £6.99 quite dry and single grape judging by our last one; Tesco Finest Bisol Prosecco di Valdobbiadene NV £9.99 nice and could possbly be said to be finest under £15.00 in a supermarket

Primi

Brochurst Lane Nettle risotto

Necessity is the mother invention so when I asked Alex what we've got lots of in the garden one Spring Alex isntantly replied 'Nettles!' so I made sweet tasting nettle risotto which is an intersting and popular recipe from the Italian 'poor kitchen' (cucina povera).

Alex's Wine recommendation; A light red is my preference so M&S Terre Di Giumara Frappato Nerello Mascalese 2011 at £8.99 or the interesting value Nicosia Etna Rosso 2011 at £9.99. Alternatively, Allegrini Bardolino ‘Naiano’ from Majestic is nice but not cheap ar £8.49 or Waitrose 2008 Recchia Bardolino, Veneto at £5.99 or Tesco's own at the same price. For a bit heavier to go with the cotechino next course Aldi Edgbaston have a new DOC Valpoloicella Ripasso (with semi dried grapes so a bit sweeter which is good with game) at £7.99 For bargain baesement nice and good value try Aldi Cotes du Rhone - maynbe not as good as Guigal Cotes du Rhone as £7.99 to £10.00 but at £3.79 its a bargain!

Secondi

Spezzatino di maiale - slow cooked Tamworth pork with tomatoes, black olives and Nduja. Served with lentils.

A family favourite at home and when we're in Southern Italy. Slightly spiced or 'piccante' with a hin of sweet and sour this recipe is a Squisito  cacciatore in the Sun - a dish that welcomes better weather after a fearfully wet 'n windy start to the year.

Wine recommendation: Blending wine used to be reserved for lesser wines to make the vintage go further but now blending is being used creatively to make some exciting and well balanced wines for early drinking. That means better value. My start and end recommendadtions are both blends. The first is ROSSO Triade Rosso 2010 Waitrose £8.99 and still good value; Paolo Leo Primitivo di Manduria Puglia, Italy 2009 Waitrose £10.99; Paolo Leo Salice Salentino, Puglia, Italy 2011 Waitrose £6.49 (reduced from £8.99). For something lighter try M&S Terre Di Giumara Frappato Nerello Mascalese 2011 at £8.99 or the interesting value Nicosia Etna Rosso 2011 at £9.99 which a customer said was lovely last month. I fancy Piccini Memoro which is an unusual but very good blend of wines from 4 corners of Italy. Excellent value when reduced but currently £9.99 and better than anything French for twice the price. It will pair pretty well wit the cheese to follow.

Formaggi mista

mixed Italian cheese selection including Pecorino Perlanera from Sardinia, Casafeico Busti Pecorino al Tartufo from Tuscany, Gorgonzola dolci, Taleggio DOP from the Brenner Pass, Grana Padano DOP from Latteria Mantova with local honey & red peppercorns plus any surprises from Nico Pivard of Curds & Whey at farmers market. An eclectic tour of Italy in cheese.

Alex's Wine recommendations; sweet is the order of the day with cheese so Cantine de Vita Marsala Dolce with a nice orangey hit will go with chocolate and cheese £9.99 Waitrose, Martinez Marsala Riserva 2006 Marks and Spencer £6.49 - good at any time and leftovers make a nice tiramisu; Pellegrino Marsala Superiore Garibaldi Dolce, Sicily £6.99; Autentico Lambrusco Reggiano 2007 Marks and Spencer £7.49

Dolci

Sara's pineapple carpaccio with coconut gelato. Sara 'Queen of the Dessert' shows up celebrity chefs.

Alex's Wine recommendations;  as for Formaggi

Caffé

Alex's 100% Columbian Arabica from our 1952 design Elektra espresso machine. The Ferrari GTO of coffee machines runs on Alex's coffee.
